When hijackers struck on the morning of September 11, 2001, the sacrifice of the U.S. Army began inside its own headquarters. At 9:37 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the western facade of the Pentagon, tearing through three outer rings of the facility. The strike claimed 184 lives—125 personnel inside the building and 59 passengers and crew on board. Among the fallen was Lieutenant General Timothy J. Maude, the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, making him the highest-ranking American military officer killed by direct enemy action since World War II.
