Will The Army Be The First Military Branch To Draft?

The draft itself isn’t active today. The U.S. military has been an all-volunteer force since 1973. But the infrastructure behind conscription is very much alive — and it’s about to get a major upgrade. Starting December 18, 2026, the Selective Service System will stop relying on young men to register themselves. Instead, the government will automatically pull data from federal databases — driver’s licenses, FAFSA records, Social Security files — to register eligible males aged 18 to 26. This change was quietly included in the FY 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), signed into law in December 2025, with little public debate.
