VA Aid & Attendance For Army Wartime Veterans

VA Aid & Attendance (A&A) provides tax-free financial help for eligible wartime veterans and surviving spouses needing assistance with daily living (bathing, dressing, eating) or who are bedridden/blind, paying for in-home care, assisted living, or nursing homes, supplementing their VA pension to cover care costs, improve quality of life, and preserve assets by deducting medical expenses, offering significant monthly payments (thousands of dollars) to qualified applicants.
Key Benefits & Features:
  • Financial Relief: Provides extra monthly funds (e.g., over $2,300 for a single vet in 2025) on top of existing VA pensions for care.
  • Covers Care Costs: Pays for private care in homes, assisted living, memory care, or nursing homes, easing financial strain.
  • Tax-Free Income: The benefit itself is tax-free, like Social Security.
  • Asset Protection: Allows veterans to “spend down” income on medical expenses (like care, meds, dentures) to qualify, helping preserve assets.
  • Improved Quality of Life: Enables access to necessary care, enhancing dignity and safety.

Who Qualifies (General Requirements):
  • Service: Honorable service, including at least 90 days with one wartime day.
  • Medical Need: Requires help with daily activities (bathing, dressing, eating, toileting) or is bedridden/blind/in a nursing home.
  • Financial Need: Meets income/asset limits after medical expenses are considered.
How It Helps:
  • For Assisted Living: Can pay for private-pay facilities that don’t accept Medicaid.
  • For Home Care: Funds aides for daily tasks, preventing institutionalization.
  • For Spouses: Surviving spouses can receive it; a well vet with an ill spouse also qualifies for a higher rate.
